Monkey Junction Homes
Monkey Junction homes have become quite in-demand among buyers in the Wilmington area. With the addition of new residential neighborhoods like Sycamore Grove, there is a nice mix of new construction and older homes in the Monkey Junction area. Condos and townhouses are also available, within close proximity to shops, dining, and services. The median property value for homes in Monkey Junction is approximately $280,000, which is higher than the state average.
Monkey Junction is currently located outside of Wilmington's official city limits, but there has been talk of annexation of the area. The community is conveniently located just a few miles from the shores of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, and Wilmington's historic district is nearby as well. In addition, Monkey Junction is home to a number of large national retailers, so residents don't have to go far to take care of their shopping needs.
Monkey Junction or Myrtle Grove?
Monkey Junction is officially called Myrtle Grove (sometimes referred to as Myrtle Grove Junction), but residents have affectionately used the unusual moniker for about 70 years. The legend of how Monkey Junction got its name varies, though the general consensus seems to be that the name came from a gas station that was located at the junction. In the 1920s, the owner of the gas station came into possession of a monkey (some versions state that multiple monkeys were involved), and used it as a way of attracting customers who stopped at the gas station on their way to Carolina Beach. A clever bus driver who made routine stops at the station would announce to his passengers that they were approaching "Monkey Junction," which prompted his riders to investigate the unique road-side attraction. The name has been with the community ever since.
